Well I did 4 pork butts this weekend, and used royal oak lump charcoal with apple wood for flavor. These came out fantastic. With the PID controller and the fan i keep it closed. But when using it as a manual burner the fb opening id say about 50% or a lil more.
I have used 3 times as a manual, works great. Twice for sausage and once from ribs. Stable temps the whole time, great smoke. Overall very happy with the unit.
The PID controller is on and ill be trying it tonight while I smoke some pork butts. Is it need? Absolutely not, but something fun to...
Thanks. Still making minor tweaks to it.
I ordered a pid controller and fans and intend on turning it into a automated temperature controlled unit, but i can also have it be a manual unit as well. The stuff for that is coming tonight and ill start working on that and hope to have it up for the...
That is correct just finished it this weekend and seasoned it, the dampers are restricting it too much it was able to work but not like it should those will be addressed this week. I also am considering adding in a variable speed fan to assist with the air flow.
For some reason i can not get this to load upright. Anyways I added a side burner to the unit and propane storage.
Rebuilt the firebox and other doors using a square tubing frame
I have fallen a little behind on updating with pics. I will try to add more here soon. Going to try to get paint on it in a few days. Looks like a nice smoker. What thickness of material you going to use?
Added a way to to lock the wheels in place. Harbor freight clamps 5 bucks per clamp
For some reason this last picture wont import upright, I redid it in paint then it keeps rotating.
Worked on the firebox charcoal/wood holder last night.
(Railing for box to slide on)
(Charcoal/wood box inside firebox)
I tried to upload a picture of the catches on the bottom of the box for the rail system but the file was too large. Anyways the catches allow the box to slide out and...
Just a update on the progress made over the weekend. Got the frame for legs, shelf and wheels added on. Have to get the doors made, which hopefully I will do throughout the week
I am not sure of your budget but you could look into companies in your area and getting pricing for them to run the plate on a cnc plasma or it would be possible to do with hand held plasma... will they match perfect, no.... but with time and maybe some grinding make something work. I also am...
Here is an idea. Sorry I dont have a complete picture i was not able to find it, but on the end that is a matching outside plate that rotates to open or close the air flow.
If you have access to a cnc plasma cutter and 3d cad it takes a few minutes to draw up and export a program to cut. No...
Thanks Motolife.
Is this what you mean? In that picture above, it is hard to tell but each one of them have a damper recessed in the stack. How long was your stack?
Those stacks are 4 in OD 1/8in wall i think about 4 to 5 in long but the damper are 50% so it would be equivalent to having a 4...
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I did start a thread with my current build and will update with pictures as it goes. Hopefully with in a few weeks ill be posting pics of meat I smoke with it.

Hey Brandan,
Hey Brandan,
Based off a 3d model I drew using your 1 inch by 8in dimension. It is indicating a 17in diameter and the area for that 8x1 would be 5.399in^2. If you were to stick with that 17in diameter the new height you would need to get 32in^2 would be as below and it give an an...
I apologize for the length lol there was alot of work that happened to this smoker.
So I decided to build my own smoker. I have an electric vertical smoker I use frequently and I like the racking system and the door. So I decided vertical would be the way to go. I was going to do an offset box...
