BUT, after I take the meat off, it stays hot for hours usually, certainly until all the coals are burned through (although, I usually do not cover that last hole where the Guru adapter...
I use standard Kingsford charcoal. I don't think the guru is at fault, as the fan is off the entire time.
I will try the top vent in the future. Have always read never to touch it but I'll give that a go.
I mean if it's getting too hot, and the fan isn't going, air has to be getting in there...

Yes, I think next time I need to start with less charcoal, fill the water pan, and be less aggressive at the start. I did have all the vents open at first to get it up to temp, but I think I should have ended that early and just let the partyq do most of the leg work, batteries be damned...

Just bought a PartyQ and doing 2, 10-lb pork butts overnight. Minion method, lit about 15-20 coals, about 35-40 degrees here in DC. As per PartyQ instructions, all vents are either closed or covered with tape except the fan vent.
Thought if anything, my batteries...
