Well smoker number 2 is in the final stages. Just a few minors things to finish thermometers, stack cap and badging. All in all though the smoker turned out great. Now I just need to get it seasoned and ready for it's first cook.
@josheaton
Thanks. Yours looks awesome too. Your firebox opening does look small did you use feldons calculator? On this past cook I kept my damper closed quite a bit and it did great held temps really well once you add meat on there it is amazing how much different it performs. I would suggest...
Well my brother-in-law and I cooked for our church picnic this past Saturday man was it awesome. The smoker cooked like a dream the pork was delicious. We started the fires at 12 midnight and put the pork on at 2am. We finally pulled the Butts at 3pm and they were awesome.
After...
Thanks yes it does haha. I have been meaning to ask you. Have you filled your smoker full yet? I did a cook a few weeks ago and the smoker was full but regulating the heat from end to end was difficult. I'm talking 100 degree difference yet when I did an empty test it was more like 20 degrees...
Big day yesterday. I got the smoker set on the trailer. I went ahead and set the twin on there to balance out the trailer. Man it looks good. Now for paint.
I got the trailer primed and painted my favorite color (John Deere Green) next I have to put the decking down and then I can set the first smoker on it. Just in time first it's first location cook at my churches picnic June 10.
Nice I found your post about insulating the Firefox. Your smoker looks awesome. I wondered about insulating mine but a few extra logs on the fire is the cheaper option for me at this point. Have you read franklins book? It is really good and if I remember correctly he talks about his reasoning...
It's a tandem axle the axles are mobile home axles so I'm not sure of the weight capacity. I originally wanted to do a single axle but tandem axles have more stability. In the picture I just a hadn't gotten the second set of wheels on yet. What kind of smoker are you building?
Here is a pic of...
I'm not sure. I'm putting two 500 gal tanks on the trailer so I figure each of them weighs about 1500
So maybe 4000 total but then add wood to smoke with I would say 5000-6000 fully loaded.
I got the trailer welded up and the axles installed. I still have to get my electric brake hubs installed and the second set of wheels. The trailer measures pretty square can't wait to see how it pulls. Then I'll set the smoker on the trailer.
Sorry the picture is blurry.
When I cut the firebox opening I cut it lower so that the top of the sphere would act as a baffle to direct the heat down. Does it work? I'm not sure but it has to help a little bit.
I smoked 4 butts on the cooker Saturday it took about 10 hours. I forgot to take pictures of the butts on the smoker but here are some after pulled them off and let them sit. I also started the trailer I got the frame squared up and tacked.
