Baby Back Ribs with LOTS of Q/View

Why do you use the rib rack when you have so much room on your smoker? I notice in the later pictures they are just laying flat so I was wondering what the benefit of starting out sideways on a rack is?. I was given a rib rack for christmas, but my vertical smoker has several racks so I wasn't...

    Sunday 3-2-1 Baby Back Ribs

Being somewhat of a newcomer to the smoking "scene" this has been somewhat a source of frustration when looking online for advice on smoking various things. I've seen so many posts or blogs were people say "You need to cook em at least 5 hours", then another post somewhere else says "Don't cook...

How did you come up with your screen name?

Interesting... I'd never even heard of meads until this post. I could have used your screen name as well, for a different reason; I have yet to smoke (or grill) anything without a cold one in my hand. lol

Meat thermometer to monitor grill temp?

Thanks for all the replies guys. The mid 50s is a temporary thing. It was 20 when I got up for work Thursday, and 12 Friday morning, it's been a nice weekend, but cold front is coming back through tonight.  I just got the smoker for Christmas and there's really been no bugs since I got the...

Meat thermometer to monitor grill temp?

The smoker is a masterbuilt gs40 vertical propane smoker. The weather right now (and probably last night) is in the mid 50s, which is why it's odd the smoker doesn't appear to get as hot. It was colder when I seasoned it. I also noticed, since my original post that it seems I must have bumped...

Meat thermometer to monitor grill temp?

Would that work?  Here's my situation. I believe the built in thermometer has gone WAY off since I bought it. Partly due to the fact that the smoker doesn't seem to get as hot as it did when I 1st seasoned it. Secondly, last night I smoked some burgers and they got a little dried out. The 1st...

Making your own rub (how to get started?)

Thanks for the tips CrankyBuzzard, and trust me... I NEVER cook anything for guests if I'm not 100% sure I know what I'm doing. So far I've only ever done ribs for the family. If it turns out well, I'll take a couple ribs to a buddy at works that is also a smoker. So far, I've taken rib samples...

Making your own rub (how to get started?)

Thanks for the reply CliffCarter. That does look like it would be delicious, but what I'm trying to figure out is how one would go about creating a rub from the ingredients they already use. And I guess it would be more accurate to say "how to pre-mix" a rub that I already use so that I can...

Making your own rub (how to get started?)

My girlfriend has always done any seasonings/marinades etc since we have been together for most of the last 8 years. (Actually until I got a grill, she did all of the cooking). Once I started smoking ribs and chicken on the grill, I started seasoning things on my own, basically just guessing at...

How did you come up with your screen name?

lol... I've had tequila induced stripes a couple of times.

How did you come up with your screen name?

Tequila and I go back pretty far as well. I had to greatly reduce my consumption though as I developed an allergy to it that caused me to break out in dumb assiness.

How did you come up with your screen name?

That's the dyslexic spelling of my name.

How did you come up with your screen name?

No creativity here... My name's Mark and although we american's love to abbreviate/shorten names (bill, bob, jan, jen, shelly (michelle) etc, etc, etc....) I guess when your name is only one syllable it must be lengthened, so people seem to prefer calling me Markus. M is last initial, because...

Brand new smoker failed Soapy Water test, could it be because of very cold weather?

Yeah, on that part I'm wondering if the seal may need to just warm up. I pulled the tank right off my grill before connecting it to my smoker and later read that with the wind chill it was below zero at parts of the day. It may be the seal needs to warm up enough to "relax" the rubber so it will...

Brand new smoker failed Soapy Water test, could it be because of very cold weather?

Also... I know not to light it if it's leaking gas.

Brand new smoker failed Soapy Water test, could it be because of very cold weather?

I agree it should do what it's supposed to. What I meant was people complaining about the thin metal, smoke leaking around the door, bad design of chip and water pan etc... Many people expect to have to mod the smokers to get it to work better or more efficiently, not just to work. Like I said...

Brand new smoker failed Soapy Water test, could it be because of very cold weather?

Thanks for the replies. The metals etc... contracting is why I wondered if it might be the cold weather. As for poorly made products... there's really not much of a choice for me. I researched a lot of different smokers before buying this one, and this was one that had some of the best reviews...

Brand new smoker failed Soapy Water test, could it be because of very cold weather?

Title says it all pretty much. I just got a Masterbuilt extra wide propane smoker, and today I thought I'd go ahead and "pre-season" it. I looked in the manual to see what all I needed to do and it mentioned doing a leak test anytime you connect a new tank. It's a little embarrassing, but I've...

Just bought Masterbuilt extra wide propane smoker, have a few questions...

Thanks for the tips. I also quit soaking my chips. I've read all over the place some people saying you must soak them and some saying not to. I quit doing it because, as I stated before, the only thing I noticed soaking did was make it take a lot longer for the chips to actually start smoking. ...
