I think a grill gets hot enough that brushing it off with a wire brush is fine but since smoking is done at lower temps a good cleaning won't hurt but 200o+ is plenty hot to kill the nasties.

I would have opted for braising them in the oven. Rub em up & lay on a sheet pan and pour a little beer over them. Then cover and braise @ 300o for about an hour then into the smoker for a couple of hours @ 250o. This method won't cook all of the flavor out of the meat and you can use the juices...

Iffin ya want pulled pork but don't have the time try doing country style ribs. They are cut from the butt and only take 4-5 hours to get them to pull apart.

Sounds like you did everything correctly but as Rich indicated, if a bark was not present(dark crust on the outside of the meat) the smoke flavor won't be nearly as intense. Did you get any pics to post?
Can't live without either one myself. We'll, I could but it wouldn't really be living. Now that you got the kegerator you can work on a new smoker! Here is my basement set up.
