I also use mine as the primary source of smoke. The Char-Broil smoker I modified originally came with a very small chip tray in the bottom of the unit. It didn't produce smoke consistently, and you had to open the main door to refill it - losing all your heat in the process. With the AMTS in...
I got both the 12" tube and the maze. I really like both, but I really prefer the tube. It puts out more smoke than the maze, and it will burn plenty long enough for most jobs. When I run the maze, I usually end up lighting both ends, so it smokes more. I also did the mailbox mod on my...
I used a painted steel model for mine. I don't believe the AMPS generates enough heat to release any toxic fumes. I've used my mailbox mod several times now and I don't see any evidence of the paint even starting to bubble.
That's a darn good deal. I want to upgrade to a pellet grill in the near future. I'll have to look into a bulk buy before my usage starts to increase. In the meantime, my little AMTS can't possibly burn enough pellets to justify storing that much.
I just looked up the Lumberjack pellets on Amazon. With the sale A-Maze-N has going on, they come in a bit cheaper than the Lumberjack pellets...Just FYI.
I was just having this debate in my head, as well. I was going to order some pellets from A-Maze-N, but then I looked at price vs. the big bags of pellets you can get at the farm store, so I had to do some research. As mentioned before, the bulk pellets might be 20% flavor wood and the...
Unfortunately, I didn't have time to make any finishing sauce this time around. I ended up having to help do a bunch of the setup stuff. All I did was put the drippings and 1/2 cup of apple juice in the bottom of the crock pot to warm it up. I still think it turned out well, and I did get a...
8.5 hours, and done! I think it turned out OK. Its not overly smoky, but I can make a few changes next time to optimize the smoke flavor. I'm still pretty new at this game, so the learning curve is fairly steep yet. I went ahead and pulled the roasts directly into the crock pot. There...
Thanks for the suggestions! The alarm on my el-cheapo temp monitor went off about 20 minutes ago. I had it set for 165. I brought the roasts into the kitchen and wrapped them in foil. When I did, I double checked the temp with a hand probe, and it read 160. I think it might be time to...
OK, at the moment, I have a couple boneless Boston roasts in my modified Char-Broil electric smoker. One is a shade over 6 lbs and the other is a shade under 5. I'd like to get them perfectly cooked for pulled pork sandwiches for a family reunion lunch tomorrow. Whats the best way to handle...
OK, so I found a 60 gallon air compressor tank in a junk pile, and I was wondering if it might be a good tank to use for a smoker build. If so, what would be the best/optimal use for it - vertical or horizontal reverse flow?
Its about 20" in diameter and 36" tall - not including the ends. I...
Well, I manged to fumble my way through my first couple cooks with my custom rig. A couple weekends ago, I did my first "real" cook - a couple of pork loin roasts. I didn't get a chance to take any pics - I had some hungry family members waiting to be fed. They turned out very moist and...
Update, in case anyone is interested: it really seems to draft well, when the heat is on. I get a nice consistent thin blue smoke that's not too pungent or offensive. I guess since the pellet smoker has to make its own draft when cold smoking, it's a lot more finicky about air flow. The one...
