Sorry, no more pics. It's gone to it's new home. It just looks like a regular uds only smaller. 4 nipple, 3 capped and 1 with a ball valve. 4 nuts and bolts to hold the grate and the charcoal basket depicted above.
Well, my first idea was to make a mini WSM like I seen on the Weber forums...
They have a dealer locator on their website. It's funny that they are not generally sold in the stores normally associated with outdoor cooking. Seems they like to sell them at fireplace shops and such. I got mine from Prairie Janitorial who is my local Treager dealer. I know there are other...
I've been making my own with a sliding compound miter saw and it's working just fine. It's a little finer than Todd's dust so it burns a bit quicker. I get around an hour per row that way but most things I smoke don't need anymore than a full 6x8 AMNS can provide at that burn rate anyway. ...
Auber makes one for charcoal smokers now.

Looks alright for the price. Aparrently it's basically a fancy PID.
I use firewood all the time but only because I know exactly what kind of wood it is. I get all the birch firewood I want for free from my neighbor who uses it for heat in the winter. It's cut and seasoned, kept under cover. Works beautifully! If you can't identify the wood I wouldn't use it...
You could also build a "mini WSM" with it by cutting the bottom of a steamer pot out and putting it in the middle between the bottom and the lid. Move the grate up to the top with 4 bolts and nuts and throw a terra cotta saucer in the bottom as a heat diffuser. Lots of info on the weber forums.
That looks great! I think if I build something like that the roof will be hinged so I can flip it back if necessary but still not blow away in the wind!
Just an update, I tried out the expanded metal basket with pretty much the same results. So I put a total of about 6lbs in and tried it again. I lit 8 briquettes and waited for them to fully ash over. I put them in a small pile in the middle of the unlit pile. I had no problem running 230F...
Yeah, even as far away as I am we got a lot of smoke last year. Good luck with camping, it's supposed to rain here all week and through the weekend. I just hope it doesn't snow!
You live up near Slave Lake? That's pretty horrible, eh? I've been dealing with wind all spring down south here. I can't even do work on my shop because I can't handle the sheet lumber in the wind.
Well I have been wanting a temperature controller to use with my WSM and UDS and this was near the top of my list. Not anymore. with that kind of customer service, they ain't getting any of my money. Now it's between the Auber and BBQ Guru NanoQ. I like the price on the Auber but the NanoQ...
Lost these pictures but just found them! Was a really good fattie! Brought home a tray full of leftovers from a snack platter and thought it would go good in a fattie. The ground meat is a mixture of lean ground pork and ground turkey. I'm not a huge fan of most sausage available around here...
Well I made a new basket today. One of the guys I work with brought me a big piece of expanded metal from his scrap pile. Had to burn the paint off, but it will be just fine!
Here's the first basket made from a steamer insert.
And here is the one I built today:
I used the charcoal...
