I apologize for the delay, but there are 3" between them. We did weld shims to the bottom edge of the RF plate on the firebox side to ensure the grease would flow towards the drain tube, so it isn't exactly 3" all the way across.
After completing the reverse flow conversion on my OK Joe's Highland I finally got to try it out! I did my trial run with a rack of St Louis pork ribs and a whole roaster chicken. I used mesquite for the smoke, my own rub recipe (a nice flavorful heat), and tried the 3-2-1 method for the ribs...
@JCBigler I will have to measure it when I get home. @Spokes I only have some backyard grill brand thermometers from Wal-Mart right now, but they did read slightly low for awhile. I think if I just keep my intake vent open all the way from the get go it will maintain ideal temps. I'm saving up...
