Bought mine two weeks ago and absolutely love it! I would recommend buying a AMNPS to turn adding wood chips every 30 to 45mins to a set it and forget it smoker!
Yeah, the water pan was putting out a ton of moisture, and with the tray not being pulled out the odds were against having any smoke. As for your mods let us know how they turned out.... maybe even some pics! =)
