Great auction score of 1/4" sheet steel!

Congratulation! You did OK! $360.00/sheet for 4x8x1/4” A36? Holly cow...that is pretty steep! Last month I was quoted a bit over $300/sheet for 5 sheets of 5x10 x1/4” A36 & and took a pass. Ended up substituting with some surplus 5/16“ I had laying around.

    Riddle me this one...

Second what CHP said. If the tank was setting level and fully filled with water such that it ran out of the opposite valve, the water would completely displace any residual petroleum gas. Assuming the detector is picking up actual LPG there are a couple things that could explain why...

    Mercaptan?

That is a pretty labor intensive process, but it will work and most importantly, will keep peace in the neighborhood. if you completely filled the tank so that water was flowing out of the valves, I guarantee all of the lpg gas was displaced and the tank is safe to cut. You will still have...

    Mercaptan?

I store my build tanks in an outside lot right side up with valves removed and find it takes 5-6 months for tanks setting in the open to air out. Even then I occasionally catch a small whiff of captan. An old builder I knew used to rig-up a small fan to blow fresh air into his tanks for a...

    Cleaning Concrete Stains?

If it is a rust stain, no amount of degreaser will cut it. Try something called ”iron out”...it will take care of the rust. Be sure to follow safety precautions listed on label.

    Citrus Wood: Remove Bark?

Don‘t sweat the bark, just be sure the wood is well seasoned before you try to use it. Citrus is great for chicken, fish and other “light” proteins.

    Is it big enough?

Unless you are a proficient welder, I suggest passing on the thin wall 30 gallon tank. Just not worth the effort for such small capacity.

    Vertical Smoker Build

You will have to ask the folks at Tajas. Send them pics of what you have, they should be able to make some recommendations. Since you are on city gas, it is probably hooked to a low pressure line.

    Vertical Smoker Build

Water pan will catch some of grease. If the unit is hot enough, most of the water will cook off. The stuff that runs down the walls and door is going to pool at the bottom of the unit. Hopefully there is a removable drip pan below the burners to catch stuff that makes it past the water pan...

    Vertical Smoker Build

Didn’t realize you had it pinned into aN interior brick enclosure...that obviously will help temper the ambient factor. However I don’t think those little burners are going to get you there, check out Tejas’s website for some options with more horsepower. Are you burning lpg or natural gas...

    Vertical Smoker Build

Try it again it with the exhaust full open. Yes, it may seem counterintuitive, but to achieve a healthy balance, the system needs to move air. This is particularly important during a cook to help expel excess moisture and prevent creosote build up. 32K of burner is probably something you are...

    600 Gal RF build

Based on the success of your first run, I don’t think you will experience too many “problems” 😉. As you get more cooks under your belt, the smoker will begin revealing its “quarks“. Sometimes a hot spot may only be an area running 10 degrees hotter...which doesn‘t seem like much, but over a...

Method to Season a new RF Smoker

Congratulations! Time to tack a few practice laps before the company cook. You have done everything necessary to fully prep the tank for seasoning so it’s history as an oil tank is no longer an issue. Regarding seasoning....I found the most effective way is to procure a couple large spray...

Can smoking with certain wood cause allergic reaction?

The proteins that cause human nut allergies are found in the plants fruit, not the wood. I have family members with severe nut allergies and we have never had a problem with the smoke produced from the wood of nut trees. If you are still skeptical, think about why someone with an egg allergy...
