If your coal base is 6" off the bottom I would want my intake bottom at 4" and the top around 7" or 8" at the top. I like to catch the bottom and at least the middle of my coal base.
My bet is your axle will need to be to the very rear of the chamber.
On the intake issue would it be possible to drop the left and right frame and catch the belly of the firebox?
Looking at your pic I would attach the two chambers below your main chamber exhaust. Have either a butterfly or slide damper to close it off when not in use. So if you want to use the upright as a cooker close off the main chamber exhaust open the 8" connector and open the warmers exhaust. The...

Glad to help onodle. :)
I do not have a lot of experience in the earthen cookers like some here but I know what it takes to make a cooker draw. I look at an earthen cooker much like a steel cooker in the winter you have to let the steel heat up to get her to draw. Like Dave mentioned the...

Pretty much one in the same. If you are not handy and have to buy a Pit Barrel is a good option. If you are handy and can get a non lined drum ( I hate lined drums lol) build your own. :)
Right below your main chamber exhaust add a connector with either a butterfly or slide damper to shut it off or open to the warmer chamber. This way if you only want to use the warmer with no smoke close off the connector and use it that way. If you want to smoke in it close off the main chamber...
