I am not familiar with the Bradley, but could it be that you had a stronger draft for some reason? Was it windier than normal? Anything on the smoker set up differently? You may be right on with the AMNPS being too close to the heat source. Hopefully someone with a Bradley will come along with...
I have both. I use the AMNS and dust for cold smoking, and the AMNPS and pellets for hot smoking in my MES. I think those are the primary reasons to have one or the other. I bought the AMNS when Todd came out with them, and then added the AMNPS after he came up with that design, Love them both!

Welcome Jon! I would think a consistent source of hickory would be a challenge! What type of source do you have now? I am trying to think of other sources in that area.

You can test your meat probe using an ice bath to make sure it is accurate. Put a binch of ice cubes in a cup with water and let it sit for a while to get the water temp to 32 degrees. If your therm reads 32 it is accurate. If it is, I would believe that over the MES. The temp differences...
Try to turn off the unit, unplug it for a minute or so, and reset to 225 and see what happens after 20 minutes. If it is still high, try turning it lower until you get the right temp, so you can at least finish the smoke.
