the fire box is small, as is the connection between the two, (holds 2 12" x 18" grates) and would never work if the unit wasn't forced air. i'll have 50 cfm of blower power forcing the hot air and smoke into the smoker chamber.

in regards to sealing the door, you may want to try the product int he link below. it is a high temp seal used to replace worn seals on wood burning stove doors. You will also need to purchase the proper adhesive to install it. just google "stove rope adhesive" and you'll find plenty...
