Hello there Newbie, If you need smoke and only have small pieces or pellets, you can wrap them in Aluim. foil with a couple holes and place right on the fire.
I live in Southern Calif. on the Desert side of the Mts. and I get my Alder Pellets from Lee's Bee's in Lancaster. They are a lanscape type place and carry pellets for stoves and some BBQ pellets. $10.00 for 20 lb bag.
Don't mess with that oil tank. That old oil is still in the metal and you can have some fireworks when cutting it. Also you will probley get some oil flavor when you try using it.
Did you try your local Home and Garden place. You know, the place that has colored rock, bird baths, etc. I get mine there a lot cheaper then you guys. If they don't have any ask them to roder some for you.
I don't think old age has anything to do with it. I think that YOU are just looking too much. Stick in a therometer if you want to know how it is doing.
The wife likes these over the Bone type and she does the shopping. I use the 3-2-1 method with a dry rub and when doing the #2 I add a small can of Apple Juice. This is a no fail method
What ever you do just keep it simple and make sure it doesn't burn. I like the thick kind of Marmalade. Spelling is probley worng but you get the message.
