Got one of these from my daughter in NZ - what a fantastic little device.
It's a venturi smoke generator, all stainless steel, comes with the air pump, piping, etc.
It needs a small hole (about 1/2") and a couple of screw holes to mount it on the side of anything (smokehouse, BBQ, etc.) plug...
Temps are a problem, but there are a couple of commercial smokers around that seem to cope pretty well. Cleanliness is key, I think. The ice idea is interesting - I will look up some old ice-box designs and see if I can incorporate them. I can buy solid blocks of ice pretty cheaply - a couple of...
The timber - pretty straight for round here:
My 'workshop' is a nightmare place infested with mosquitos, continually bombarded with bamboo leaves (big bamboo jungle next door) and with the odd visitor - like cobra or 10ft pythons who like timber to hide in. To keep th attentions of the...
Today I am starting my smokeshed - smaller than a smokehouse, but bigger than I probably need. I am anticipating that when my friends find out what great stuff I am producing, it will get more use :)
I live on the humid, hot and insect-infested island of Borneo and as such, all my materials...
I have been looking at building a small smoker.
There are just the two of us, we live in a Muslim country (so none of our neighbours will be interested in anything we cook - especially if I use the smoker for pork products), and we aren't big meat eaters anyway.
I am mainly making bacon - a...
Hey, another old-timer!
I have had this handle since the late 80s too! But we didn't have the internet at home back then, it was all BBS. I used to work for a comms manufacturer and I got to buy product at a big discount. So bare modem boards, the new ISA bus ethernet cards, the latest 386...
So no vents in the top at all? Do I need to put in a slider to manage the airflow like I have on the front, or is that not necessary? I have a ton of woodworking tools - routers and the like, cutting slots is no problem at all.
Did you mean something like this?
And bug protection is a must...
Snow? I hate snow, and cold. Give me a nice 30C and gentle breeze all year long and I'm happy. The worst thing about living here is the length of the days. It's dark by 6.30 at night - every night. It gets light about 5.30am. Not much of a variation to that all year long. I do miss long summer...
Hi Dave,
We have very high humidity here on the equator, but never gets below 25C, even in the middle of the night. Usually it is around 30-35C during the day (85-95F) with 70-90% humidity (lots of rain!). We have more variation during the day than throughout the year - i.e. it varies about 10C...
