    Re-cutting doors?

I guess its gonna be one of those things where ya just have to get into it and see just how bad it really is. I know when a friend did his, I thought for sure that the thing was on the way to the junk yard but he managed to save it.  I couldn't believe it, but some grinding and some key...

An old smoker gets moved over to a big boy trailer.

Caution,,,,,This post is a little heavy on the pics. Starting to line things up.   Side plates cut and tacked, ready to weld. A think this was my first peeler of the day. Not a full peel but a start.      Welded up as a unit, lining up to weld.    A little better peel.    Yet...

    Massive pork butt

OMG     Maybe it was as bad as what I did. Did ya save the meat? And our temps didn't go back down quite that fast.

New smoker - Help needed with troubleshooting

By all means, open that sucker up.  You can always shut down the fire with the damper on the firebox door.  The silicone you linked to will work fine. But the silicone with the rope will work better.  On my first couple builds I used the silicone only. What I did was lay down a big oll fat...

An old smoker gets moved over to a big boy trailer.

I have a tekonsha proportional controller, that has a pendulum inside which reacts to the percent of grade you are on as well as how forceful you apply the brakes and reacts in an appropriate manor. Its an awesome controller when set up proper.  Not all controllers are equal.  They are...

An old smoker gets moved over to a big boy trailer.

Since I had no 4" square tube I had to make do.  I hate this part, since with new steel I could have cut it to length and went to welding.  As it is, I had to strip the surge mech and weld up the 6 locations where I cut it from the trailer tongue.  I cut a taper on the tail end and also...

An old smoker gets moved over to a big boy trailer.

Well life's been busy, and not much has been done. I do have a set of 4 elec brakes, break away kit, and weight dist hitch for the trailer. The brakes will make all the difference in the world.  The weight dist hitch is needed since I miscalculated my weight and axle location.  The fix for...

If I dream it......... will it work?

Looks good,  And Hell Ya, if you dream it then it can and should be built.  I think the drums work fine in the warmer climates, just watch for moisture in the ash when you aren't using the smoker. A wet ash box made from a drum will rust thru fast.

Can a butt be smoked a couple days in advance

I think 1/3 lb per person is average, I just can't remember if thats cooked or uncooked. As far as before hand, go for it.  Cook it as normal. Rest it and then pull it.  Pack it with juice in vac loc bags. If your within a week just put it in the frig. Freeze it if its gonna be longer. On...

    Massive pork butt

WOW !!!!!   At least when I did that, all that happened was our temps went to 400 plus. I was drinking tho. Of course we were using a woodburner.

    Resurrect or not to Resurrect?

Tinker with it for now, and work on the wife. Remind her it was your grandpa's, that may work. LOL It may not even take blasting, might be able to hit it with a sanding block and a shot of high temp paint. If it makes heat, you could just shine it up a bit for now and wait to do a total restore...

New to smoking, already have a concern!

Welcome to the site and congrats on the marriage.  OK, the water thing and the bottom of the unit. Should be no worries there, if it gets to deep. Put something under it to prop it up. LMAO at a contest once we got storms and had to put the mini frig on a spare tire. The water got really deep...

How many butts do you think will need

Yikes,,,,,,I'm thinking that I would not be qualified to answer this question. But I think if I was put in your shoes, I would buy a case (I get all my meat at sam's until I get my tax ID for R Depot.) So a case is like 8 butts I think.  I did a wedding and cooked up 78 lbs uncooked butts. ...

    Resurrect or not to Resurrect?

Well,,,,,,,Fire it up and see what kinda temps you get just like it sits. If temps run decent then by all means clean that baby up and remember your grandpa every time you smoke. I'm sure he would be happy to see ya make use of it.  From what I can see, it doesn't look like it would take to...

    ~Backwoods Style Build

I followed a build on the praririe bbq site a while back. The guy used a commercial frig, the up tubes as well as the stack tube where hidden in the rear wall. Within the space where the insulation goes.

Building a couple of 20" smokers (Done)

Very nice design on the firebox, I really love the look with the radius bottom. Its looking like you may have done a couple of these.  Do you build and sell? Or just build for fun?

    ~Backwoods Style Build

Its magic......LOL Just kidding man, I couldn't resist. The fire is down under in the front usually. The heat flows up a tube to the top area of the cook chamber. The exhaust vent hole is most often at or near the bottom but sometimes there is also holes mid-way up to help create even temps...

    Re-cutting doors?

Maybe run the online pit calc with your numbers and see just how far off it is right now as it sits. If you needed to change the fire to cook area opening now would be the time to do it.  The ez 125 is an awesome little welder. That machine will pull its weight and then some, its the little...

    Stok Tower

Nice !!!  Very Nice. I think I am going to have to ask for one of these for my B Day. For me this would be perfect for the occasional snack while cooking on the big smoker. The pie looks fantastic.
