I have a side fire box smoker that only has a side door, no top door. What is the best way to light lump charcoal with this setup? Obvioulsy cant use a charcoal chimney. When do I add the smoking chunks? After the tempm is correct inside the smoker?

Guys, I burned the bottom third of the barrel out real good for several hours, washed the barrel and then noticed this slimy pink haze/ooze is still there. When I wet it and run my fingers over it, it comes off to a degree. I am guessing it is the liner material. I am amazed anything is still...

I just checked at the local rental shop. $60 a day for a really big splitter and if I rent it on Saturday I get to keep it until Monday. As long as I make it to Church, I don't believe the Lord will mind me splitting some of his fine wood on Sunday to feed my family some good Q.
Its closer to a 1/2" than 3/8" and heavy as all get out. I should have it back home in a day or two. Having a base welded on. Then I will clean, paint and post photos. :-)

We are not allowed to burn in the city limits so dont want to start a huge barrel fire. I am sure I can get away with small fires such as the type used in smokers, fire rings, etc. without raising eyebrows. Given this is just a burn barrel would I need to burn it out totally? I am hard pressed...
I was able to get a barrel to use as a pre-burn barrel. It will not be used for smoking. It originally had one part of a two part water based epoxy in it. I am assuming that whatever was in it was not good to eat. The barrel also has a coating inside.
