Seasonings/Rubs - Buy or Make Own?

For me the PRIME example of too much salt in a seasoning mix is Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning. "Directions: Use like salt. When it's salty enough, it's seasoned to perfection." WRONG!!! When it's salty enough the food doesn't have enough of the other seasonings. When it has...

    Buying Meat in Iowa

Went to The Greater Des Moines Metropolitan Area ( :D ) today and just got home a few minutes ago. Last stop while I was there was Costco. Have beef prices dropped or is my memory failing me? I saw quite a bit of good looking beef cuts around $5.99 a pound. I thought they had been...

boston butt , pork shoulder mix up at sams

I know I said I would gracefully bow out of this conversation but I just got home from Costco. I asked the meat cutter if there was a difference between a pork shoulder and what people call a pork butt. He said, "No." with no hesitation. FWIW.

What's your favorite off-the-shelf/store-bought barbecue sauce?

I see that high fructose corn syrup is the main ingredient in Sweet Baby Ray's. That annoys me. Plus it's way too thick and sweet. Stubb's used to be near perfection then something changed. It might be that they added too much liquid smoke. Something just isn't right with Stubb's any more...

    Fast food pricing

A few weeks ago Walmart was charging $5.59 for an 8 ounce bag of plain potato chips. That's $11.18 a pound ... at Walmart!?!?!? Are they freaking nuts??? Nobody can convince me that Walmart isn't gouging the crap out of their customers.

What's your favorite off-the-shelf/store-bought barbecue sauce?

I heard a little while back that the company had changed hands. I haven't had Maull's since then. Maybe the new owner ruined it.

What's your favorite off-the-shelf/store-bought barbecue sauce?

I greatly appreciate everyone's responses. I think I'm going to start experimenting by making the recipe Charles posted and going from there. It should be fun. Of course I'd like to see how this thread proceeds. If any of you want to post your favorite recipe that would be greatly...

What's your favorite off-the-shelf/store-bought barbecue sauce?

I mentioned that Stubb's was once my favorite but then something changed. I contacted them and asked them what in their recipe changed. They told me nothing had changed. I thought maybe I got a bottle from a questionable batch. I still can't use Stubb's. Too bad because it was pretty near...

    Shrinkflation/Inflation Fighting Homemade Mayonnaise

Never cared for Mayo. My family likes Spin Blend but the company got bought out recently and makes a limited amount of it and as far as I'm concerned they may as well be distributing it only to employees and their families. It's not available here. We switched to Miracle Whip but it just...

    Buying Meat in Iowa

I'm rarely in a Fareway but when I am I always check out the meats in the butcher area. I checked with my son earlier today and he said he likes Fareway better than Costco for meats. I rarely make it to Costco since the pandemic began but there's a Fareway closer to me that I need to begin...

What's your favorite off-the-shelf/store-bought barbecue sauce?

I'm originally from St. Louis and grew up loving Maull's barbecue sauce. Excellent stuff! It was being sold in Iowa for a little while so I'd pick it up at Walmart. That didn't last long. It has a little bit of heat to it and that doesn't/didn't do well in this state. After I moved to Iowa...

    Buying Meat in Iowa

I just recently got back on this site after a few years so yeah, I guess I am and I'm not one bit ashamed to do it. :) Looks like very little activity here so I thought why not, I live in Iowa. I don't know if I ever posted to this group in the past but I probably will be checking here pretty...

boston butt , pork shoulder mix up at sams

So you're saying the shoulder blade is in the butt and not in the shoulder?!?!?! If I was a betting man I'd bet on the Sam's Club meat department manager. I'm going to gracefully back out of this conversation now. :D
