Yes I was talking about the top door, I was gonna look at getting some draw tight latches to seal it up as opposed to welding it shut. I kinda like the top door for adding large splits but that's just me.

Thanks y'all, I had to stop working on the toys for a while and build my son a bed. Once I get that thing done I'll get back on the fire box and get it finished so I can weld it to the main chamber. I have to finish the stacks and shut off valves first. Here is a pic of the stacks, they are...
The firebox is okay, I have the same unit and at least it isn't too small. Work on the inlet and outlet as well as that top door. You need a good seal on the top door, the way they are designed causes them to warp from all the heat and they don't shut too well. I still need to fix mine, for now...
Your 41& 1/2" tubing is still 41&1/2 " long regardless if it's mounted flush or down in the smoke chamber. I think it's a volume issue and you shouldn't have any adverse effects sticking down to grate level. JMO
I have the same unit and you are right, it's pretty well built but needs some mods to make it work right. The firebox to cook chamber is almost twice the size it needs to be and the firebox air inlet is a little too small also. The stack is a couple inches too short as well. I would think you...
I picked up a drop of the 6" from a project out at the plant. On the stainless they let me have it for scrap value.
The stainless rods are like welding with a real runny 7018 and there is no procedure for welding pipe with it, you have to use an all position rod for pipe or use another method...
I am almost finished with the connector for the upright portion of the smoker finished. I wanted something a little different and something that won't rust or need a lot of maintenance. I built the first one out of 6" sched 10 316 ss but it seemed a little light so I made another out of sched 40.
I think your weather made it down here, we had a 40 degree temp drop. I won't seal weld the bracing, it's not necessary i.m.o. That last pic is the firebox upside down with the stainless plate looking up. The 309L is only good for flat and horizontal so I have to wrestle that thing into position...
It's looking real good, I like the lock. You can tell that you took your time to make it right. On butt joints, as you travel up moving left to right.... I like to pause just for a second on each side. 7018 is a low hydrogen fast deposition filler. By pausing at the sides and passing quickly...
Your smoker is looking really good. I love the axle set up too, I'm going to do a tandem rigid set up for mine almost identical to yours. I dumpster dive at work all the time. The rig welders started leaving all the good scrap on the ground next to the dumpsters so I can sift through it easier.
