I would suggest that you try chunks. If you've got a large smoker, I would suggest splits. I don't ever soak as I see no different results, but I've got a different smoker.

Mine, too, sparks quite a bit. I have to keep a close eye on it, and keep children and pets away. It does, however, give me the best performance of any charcoal I've found. Our 10# bags are a little over $5.00 each around here, if I remember correctly.
Dan, I use the Royal Oak lump exclusively. Be careful though, it tends to spark. That wouldn't be good if you have a wood deck/cooking area, or small children around.

That's correct, Duckman. Just outside the perimeter of where your sfb is bolted on, in your second picture, you will have a tack welded piece in there that will pop out fairly easily....kinda like a piece of paper that has been perforated. In my case, I removed the sfb and gave it a whack or...
