Thanks everyone for the tips, pointers, and info. I plan to be smoking something this weekend. I also plan to use the MES just how it is for my first few smokes with it then i will mod, take away, and/or add whatever i feel necessary to get optimal use out of it.
Thanks @Bearcarver im sure i can fab some sheet metal to fix that slanted drip tray i have been looking through your index of smoking and other stuff a lot of great stuff in there.
The pellet tray will definitely be my first investment with this smoker. I also been doing a bit of digging and it seems my MES is a gen 2 and from what i can tell thats the worst one to have... also mine has the vent on top left instead of the side left? later model maybe?

It seems most major manufactured smokers have pretty crappy stock thermometers. i definitely want a pellet tray but im not so sure of a mailbox mod unless i plan to cold smoke

Thanks,
Well like many others on here i have a Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) i also have a 22.5 Weber kettle and a gas grill i really like all my toys. i guess it more depends on your budget and style of smoking you want the WSMs are a charcoal and wood fueled smoker and its a Vertical smoker you can go...
i will have to give this a try. i haven't thought to leave the membrane on and sear it off with the gasser... and i also like the idea of cooking to 195 IT but never done that either... thanks for the post i will definitely give this a try... do you think it will work on spares the same as it...
