    First smoke including Qview

I didn't have any kind of finishing sauce prepared, since I wasn't planning to foil it. The foil was a desperation move to try to speed things up

    First smoke including Qview

Don't worry, I have this Friday off and have been commanded by She Who Must Be Obeyed to give it another go!

    First smoke including Qview

I kept the smoker between 225 and 235 all day, then wrapped the butt in foil when it hit 160 degrees (it had been in the smoker for 9.5 hours at that point)

    First smoke including Qview

Not sure what happened on the cook time...We had 10-15 mph sustained winds yesterday with gusts in the 20s, and the temp was in the high 50s for most of the day. Also, what are the chances the weight was mislabeled and maybe it was heavier than 4.5 lbs? I know the temps (both meat and smoker)...

    First smoke including Qview

I finally got to try the smoker yesterday. All in all it was a success. My smoked a 4.5lb butt which had the plateau from hades, since it took it about 12 hours to get to 200 deg internal temp. I'm re-posting the story below from my thread yesterday since it took so long to post the qview...

    Insanity sale: pork butts

It was my first smoke, but I was still pretty sure that the enhanced butts were not the way to go. Instead I went (literally) next door to Publix and got a nice fresh unadulterated butt.

    Insanity sale: pork butts

The butts here in GA are the "enhanced" variety

    Butt is in the Smoker!

So here is the Qview of the finished product (not great pics since they came from my phone)! Despite my struggle with the length of the smoke, the butt turned out really, really well. Here's the conversation my wife had with me when I started pulling: Wife: This is really good. I mean really...

Home made smoker trailer for a bicycle

As an avid cyclist, and now a newbie meat smoker, I have to say that that is one of the coolest things I have ever seen!

    Butt is in the Smoker!

Yeah, I foil wrapped it when it hit 160 and the temp started climbing comparatively quickly after that. It's currently wrapped in a towel (still in the foil) and resting in a cooler. Can't wait to see it (and taste it of course)!

    Butt is in the Smoker!

Well, I'm into hour #11 and the internal temp is about 195, so it's getting pulled off in just a little while. I'm not sure why it's taken so long today for a 4-4.5lb butt, but the temp just stopped rising for like 2.5 hours when it got around 150. It's my first attempt at smoking anything, so...

    Butt is in the Smoker!

Well, my first attempt is under way! I've got a 4lb butt in the smoker right now, the temp is pretty well dialed in, and I have thin blue smoke flowing. I can't wait to post some Qview of the finished product later this afternoon.

Good place to get a Big Block GOSM?

If you're not married to the idea of that particular brand name and you have a Lowe's close to you, you could look for the Perfect Flame vertical gasser. If you can find one in stock (online it says stores don't stock it, but mine had two) they are clearing them out at $119. I got my local...

    Insanity sale: pork butts

Here in GA it's 99cents/lb, which is not too bad I suppose

    New Smoker in GA

Seasoned the new smoker today. I got a Taylor weekend warrior digital thermometer at Lowes for temp control and fiddled with the gas control. Ended up nailing it for an hour right around 225 (allowing for minor fluctuations), so Saturday can't get here soon enough! I'm going to start with a...

    Approx Smoking Times

Thanks everybody for the great info. My main concern there was that if I tried to smoke several smaller pieces of meat rather than one really big one, would I still be setting myself up for an all-nighter on my first try. In reality it was mostly hypothetical, as I'm pretty certain that I'll...

    Approx Smoking Times

Hey everybody, I'm getting ready to smoke for the first time this weekend and I have a newbie question (I did do a quick forum search and didn't see an answer straight away, so I'm sorry if this is a common question): I've read in several places that a butt should smoke for approx 1.5 hours/lb...

    New Smoker in GA

I got a Perfect Flame 36" vertical from Lowe's. Got 'em to price match the GOSM of $108 from Wal-Mart, then the cashier gave me an add'l 10% off at checkout. All I did was ask politely about the price match, then showed the guy the GOSM webpage on my iPhone and ended up pretty darn happy!

    New Smoker in GA

Hey everybody, I'm Jeremy from Athens, GA. I've been looking forward to getting into smoking for a while, and have been lurking on the SMF and Smoking-Meat.com in the process. I just got a killer deal on a propane smoker, so I'll be smoking something for the first time this weekend!
