Use lump would be my first answer. That is probably not your problem though. I hope you didn't use lighter fluid to start your fire? Was the charcoal well lit when you added the food? Did you fire go out or nearly so? Did it produce alot of ash? What brand of charcoal did you use?

Other than heating up my grates and brushing them I have never cleaned a grate. Its un-american and not needed. haven't you seen the grills in the parks. I would not put anything like soap on my grill/smoker.

I did get a PM. He suggested the use of bricks to do the same thing. I like that advantage in that you can make changes for different cooking sessions.

Has anyone tried the tomato planters that hang upside down? I have only seen them on the TV ads and now that growing season is coming I was curious.
