    Use lump would be my first answer. That is probably not your problem though. I hope you didn't use lighter fluid to start your fire? Was the charcoal well lit when you added the food? Did you fire go out or nearly so? Did it produce alot of ash? What brand of charcoal did you use? pete

    Other than heating up my grates and brushing them I have never cleaned a grate. Its un-american and not needed. haven't you seen the grills in the parks. I would not put anything like soap on my grill/smoker. Pete

    I would do what you did last time with the smaller butts and be done early. They will stay hot for hours in a cooler with foil and towels. pete
