what is the best method of starting a uds

I fill the basket and take my weed burner and hold it in the center of the coals for about 30 sec. I am using Royal Oak Lump so I get a quick start. I stopped with all the formalities a while ago - I'm keeping it simple. I get fantastic results with my fire management.

    Smokin John's UDS Build

Here are my drums along with an open grill that I made by cutting a 30 gallon barrel in half and welding the ends together. I would not have believed it had I not seen it with my own two eyes, I got a 24 hour burn in my UDS and still had a small amount of charcoal left.

    Smokin John's UDS Build

Put the handles, tool hanger, fire basket, meat probe inlets, and pizza pan deflector. All I need to do is add my homemade BBQ Pig label on. I started a new build on a grill also.

    UDS temps

The beauty of an UDS is the ability to control and fine tune your temperature. With all vents closed, a properly constructed drum will extinguish its fire In a short period of time. Since you are unable to control your temperature, your fuel is still getting air from somewhere to continue the...

New UDS using/burning too much charcoal too fast -help

It seems like your burn time was ok. You must factor in temperature, weather condition and kind of fuel used. Your basket size must be considered. A larger bakset @ 16 to 18 inches in diameter and 9 inches in height would allow for more fuel and provide a longer burn time. You did not give the...

    Planning the build

My first rack is 5" and the second is 6". I can get a big fat turkey in the smoker with no problem. I can also pack my UDS with plenty of pork butts. I think if you are using a Weber lid you can can place your rack closed to the top.
