Thanks for the compliments. To answer your questions. I'm a design engineer. We build test rigs for stuff like helicopter gearboxes, military drivetrains/transmissions, and wind turbine gearboxes/nacelles. Although, I have spent 10+ years as a machinist/welder/fabricator prior to this gig...
I used 3/16" x 2" for the door straps. FYI. This gave me 3/4" overlap on the top of the doors, and left 1-1/4" for the stove gasket door seal to go on. (I don't know if you're planning on using stove gasket or not)
My firebox (I believe) is 22" x 22" x 24" tall. As far as heating issues, I...
SH,
Your build is looking good.
On mine, I debated the same thing. I ended up spacing the firebox about an inch away from the frame of the trailer. I then weld (2) pieces of 1/2" diameter rod between the firebox and the frame to support the firebox. This will support the firebox yet...
If a steel box and aluminum cook chamber is used, it will have to be a flanged/bolted connection. Steel and aluminum can not be welded together. (Although there are some electroplating/ brazing techniques that can be used to join these two materials.)

Bob,
My tank is 24" O.D. and 62" overall length. The wall thickness of the main cylindrical shell is .250" and the formed dome "endcaps" are .287" thick.

I wouldn't know. I finished my smoker in April, and it hasn't rained here since. (seriously).
Although, I do have the stove seal around my smoker and firebox doors so I think that would limit rain getting in....

I know what you mean about putting projects on hold. Marriage and kids did that to me...
I went though your build thread. Very nice. I hadn't seen it before, but mostly because I'm never in the Willys forum. I've been "working" on my TJ for years. (I go by IndyTJ on pirate) I've got a '99...
SH,
I cut the top at of the door at 10 degrees off of 12'oclock and the bottom of the door exactly at 3 o'clock. (So, my door is a total of 80 degrees of the tank circumference.
Here's a section view of the smoker door:
I hope this helps.....

Oh, and FYI, I spoke with both my BMV and my local police about the "trailer". Because my "trailer" is so small, that the tailights of my truck can be seen while towing this, and the fact that it cannot really be used to "haul" stuff like a conventional trailer, I do not have to have trailer...
Thanks. The trailer frame is 33" wide. This lines up the trailer springs with the spring perches on the axle I got. The axle I got (free) has WMS (wheel mount surface) to WMS distance of 42.25". The trailer frame is fabricated from 2" square x 1/8" wall tubing.
It looks top heavier than...
Holy cow. You must of scored a great deal on a lot of, what looks like 1/2"x4" steel, to make it worth welding it all together to make a firebox out of. I'm amazed you kept it flat with that much weld. Looks great. You'll be able to cook for an army with that. Are you making the reverse flow...
Thanks....I cooked 1 full and 2 half racks originally intended for 6 people. One couple got called into work (they're both cops and there was a bad accident locally) so, we only had 4 people eating.....
Thanks! This was cooked with a mixture of oak and maple, with some lump hardwood charcoal...
Thats a Koyo PLC. It's available from automationdirect.com.
The good things about them for you is that parts are available and pretty cheap relative to other PLC brands. (Like Siemens and Allen-Bradley). Also good is (I believe), the programming softwares for both the PLC and the HMI is...
Welcome and yes.
It is common to use the reverse flow plate as a water pan. A couple of hints:
Have a slight tilt on the water pan away from the firebox. (maybe a 1/2" tilt over the length of the cook chamber.) Then, put a drain pipe at the bottom end of the water pan that exits the bottom...
For the firebox to cooking chamber opening I used an online calculator, and then went just a little bit bigger than it recommended. I used this one here:
http://webpages.charter.net/tomchism/Dodis%20Calculator/
but there are several available on the SMF website if you just look around.
