    2009 Tomatoes

Thanks Alex. My dilemma is too many good ones to choose from! I am growing 55 at a friend's place and 60-70 here. I usually grow about a dozen paste varieties each year, as well as about that many different oxhearts. I find that the oxhearts are truly multi-purpose: they can be used as slicers...

    my first fatty pics

I think if you go back and use the Edit Button link, if you put the cursor after each pic and hit the Enter key 1-2x, that may solve the problem... without the line breaks the html code tries to put them all on the same line.

    2009 Tomatoes

Wow, all those pics are great! I have about 81 different varieties started and have to narrow them down to about 65, it's a really tough task! It was even hard getting to 81 from over 500 varieties, mostly heirlooms. They are mostly 5-6" tall right now, still need to get the garden ready before...

    Pastrami for Dummies

YES, I follow that part, Pastrami gets smoked, corned beef gets boiled, but when you get a corned beef to make a pastrami, has it previously been boiled? I DO FOLLOW the proper way to make a Pastrami from SCRATCH, using a fresh brisket: You brine the raw brisket, rub it & smoke it; no boiling...

    Pastrami for Dummies

I guess what I meant was, when you buy a corned beef brisket from the store, is it already boiled? And if you buy a corned beef brisket from the store to make pastrami, is it raw beef just brined but not boiled yet or is it already boiled? Isn't corned beef boiled? Am I saying this the right...

    Pastrami for Dummies

Two things: Isn't corned beef boiled after brining? And if so, wouldn't you be "cooking it" twice if you make Pastrami from corned beef? Has anybody tried Steven Raichlen's (BBQ University) Pastrami On The Grill kit? It seemed pretty expensive ($9-$10) if all you get are the spices and directions.

    First Prime Rib

Does anybody pan or grill sear it first, or don't bother? Will it still take smoke as easy if seared first? Or sear it after smoking?

Cabela's has $4.95 flat rate shipping--Apple or Pecan?

Were you planning on buying over $25 of wood chips? I was only going to buy a 20lb bag of pellets and maybe a bag of wood chips. That was $4.95 shipping! Cabela's shipping is usually based on how much you spend, unless it's oversize. Orders under $25 are only $4.95! $25.01 - $50.00 = $7.95...

Cabela's has $4.95 flat rate shipping--Apple or Pecan?

Thanks for everybody's replies. Maybe I better try finding smaller amounts to try first to decide. But that would usually mean getting stuff somewhere else or more than one place, sometimes multiple shipping charges, etc, which would defeat the purpose of this thread--to save money!

Cabela's has $4.95 flat rate shipping--Apple or Pecan?

Pecan usually isn't available up here, besides certain mail order places. I have tried many different flavors of pellets from BBQr's Delight: Hickory Jack Daniels filter charcoal Mesquite Apple Sugar Maple and just recently some of the finer size Cameron's: Oak Hickory Alder Cherry plus...

Cabela's has $4.95 flat rate shipping--Apple or Pecan?

Is it something like a webpage on your computer or on the internet? If on the internet somewhere, just post a link. If it's a webpage on your computer somewhere, just open it and hold down the CTRL key and at the same time hit the "A" key, then the "C" key (while still holding the CTRL key...

Cabela's has $4.95 flat rate shipping--Apple or Pecan?

Sorry, I'm still a newb at smoking with a real smoker, plus my only smoker is electric Masterbuilt. I'm still looking for comments on apple vs pecan. The instructions that came with the smoker listed neither for beef but both for pork, poultry & fish. They really only listed hickory &...

Don't you put wood on your charcoal? Or just straight charcoal in a Weber?

Cabela's has $4.95 flat rate shipping--Apple or Pecan?

Just a heads up to save some bucks. Since most of us use wood or wood pellets or chunks, it may be a good time to stock up. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...pod&id=0058845 Also, in their Bargain Cave, they have 10 lb bags of wood chunks (mesquite, hickory or maple) for $6.88...

    Hello from Buffalo...

Thanks everybody! Fred, I grow about 75 tomato plants & 40 pepper plants here, but I have about 40 tomatoes growing at a friend's house in West Seneca too! Mineral Springs & Harlem area. Another friend lives on Patricia... I wondered about smoking tomatoes, even to the point of dehydration. I...

    Never Smoked Before!!

Welcome to the forum sassy! I am pretty new here too and just got a Masterbuilt a few days ago & did my first smoke Wednesday/Thursday. Did you call them and did they walk you through with things to try? I didn't have any problems with mine but took a few minutes to get the hang of the digital...

    Hello from Buffalo...

Thanks everbody for the warm welcomes and I'm proud to say I did my first smoke today (Thursday!) I started by drying a bunch of peppers, mostly hot, then ground them in the blender & added a bunch of other ingredients like cumin, brown sugar, heirloom garlic, some chocolate habs, etc, for the...
