    Pit Barrel Cooker Question

Just to be sure I understand you correctly, you paid $25 to have a 55 gal drum sand blasted inside and out; and $50 to have the outside of said drum - including lid - powder coated? I've been quoted amounts more than twice that here. Of course, I live in fairly small city that might not have...

Best way to reheat boston butt.

Howdy, tater! I've reheated pulled pork in a crock pot on low with good result. When I find butts on sale I usually buy 2 or 3 and smoke them together. They will lose between 40-50% of weight in the process and removing the fat globs when pulling. I then pack them a pound each in vacuum seal...

    Pit Barrel Cooker Question

@Case: Is that pricing for blasting and powder coating regular commercial rates where you are or did you cut a good deal? I haven't found anyone here in central TX (about 120 mi. S of Smokey Tex) who offers prices that low.

Minimum size smoker for whole pig

24" diameter ain't gonna make it for a full pig of the size you mentioned. Twice that would be closer to the mark, I think.

Drums & Thighs @ The Bear Den

Who invited the buzzards? The hummingbird was nice. And the yard bird made me hungry! Good job, Mr. Bear.

Bringing home more fish to smoke

From the looks of the palm fronds, it was a bit windy. How were the seas? Nice catch, no matter how smooth or calm.

Heat resistant gloves for pulling hot meat

Do you not let the meat rest? I think most folks recommend wrapping in towels and placing in an insulated cooler for at least a few hours. In that time, the meat will cool enough that nitrile gloves should be fine, without causing you discomfort during the pulling. I find that he cooler the...

    Considering buying an Electric smoker

You've got the idea down pat. I don't adjust the vents for grilling at all, but I do for controlling temps while smoking food with the lid on. The lid stays off when I'm grilling.

    Boston Butts

I put 2 butts on the Weber this morning at oh-dark-thirty, somewhere around 5:00 am CDT. The grill was set up with a ring of charcoal lit on one end with hickory chunks about every 6 inches around the perimeter. Temps never got below 220 or above 300. I didn't adjust a single time after about...

    Considering buying an Electric smoker

I guess I forgot to get the pics that I promised daRicksta. I hope this will make amends. This first pic shows the markings on the lower vents (O=wide open; H=half open; C=fully closed). I marked them one day when I was cleaning out ashes and could see the position of the sweeps. This...

I Gotta Quit Going to HEB

The brisket at $1.97US has been working on me for the last coupla months. It's still on but I've got too much smoked brisket in the freezer to make room for any more (according to 'er indoors). Today it was pork butt (boston butt) for a buck a pound. I only bought 2 for about $20US, but I'm...

    Considering buying an Electric smoker

Rick, The ash shaker thing is the slide on the OTG and Performer that causes ashes to drop down in the removable ash bin. I don't think they have them on the other models but use the daisy wheels instead. It would not make any difference in any case whether you use the wheels or the ash...
