The last 2 times I grilled, I just used hickory with no charcoal. Turned out great and the guests loved it. Just make sure you stand upwind of the grill.
I do. Well, when I have a functional smoker. It does take a lot of firewood with this method, but you don't have problems with creosote and the smoke is ALWAYS thin and blue.
Thanks for the reply. What I'm talking about is the oven that is right on top of the firebox. I think it would get plenty of radiant heat from below, so what I am trying to accomplish is just smoke. But if this will choke the fire, then I don't want to do it. However, I will have big vents on...
Sounds like you might get that little cold spell this week too.
Last year I helped my wife start her tomatoes. I didn't pay close enough attention to the seeds and ended up planting over 200 hundred cherry tomatoes.
