    My first pork butt is in the smoker!

    I have the temp between 220 and 240 and have a chicken and a pork butt in with some hickory smoke, so far the BGE is working good and the mods I made are doin there job well. I'll get some qview up soon! Im making my own bbq sauce and if it turns out good I will post the recipe.

    Can maple or oak be used to smoke? I want to find somekind of wood around my area I can cut down myself and smoke with. Im not really big on apple wood though, but with all the apple orchards around I could probably get it easily.

    Im not burning lump, I just started learing about it. I have to find a place to buy it and if I can I plan to use it the next time I bbq. So do you just let the ash build up till the end of your smoke? Im working on gettin my coals up alittle higher in the box so the ash cant smother the coals

    To light my coals I have been doin it the old fashion way, I throw some in the SFB, spray lighter fluid on them, light'em up and let them turn gray. Then just add unlight coals as needed. The more I read though, Im starting to see that is not a good way to do it. Any tips on starting my coals??!!
