Not really. Having a smoker loaded with meat changes the dynamics of temp control, as do many other factors such as wind, ambient temperature, sunlight/shade. I started off with a brisket for my first smoke. It's not the easiest piece of meat to work with, especially right out of the gate...
I'd like a UDS too, but I only have limited access to a truck to get a barrel. If the timing is right, I plan on making one. :-)
edit: Another reason was I happened to have all the parts on hand to build this smoker. It only cost me some time and a dozen welding rods.

Well...just a little update on my homebuilt smoker. It's still not pretty...but it works like a champ. I started off with some short smokes, just to get a feel for it, but have since moved up to smoke ribs and butts. One full chimney of unlit coals and one full chimney of hot coals will chug...

I agree with what everyone else has stated...one thing to keep an eye on is the vehicles alignment if it was a front tire. If it hit hard enough to knock a chunk out of the wheel and put a knot on the tire, it very easily could have knocked the alignment out of whack or damage some suspension...
