If you have an Autozone, NAPA, or auto parts store in your area, they should have some high heat paint. Acrylic will likely end up bubbling and peeling from the heat.
If that smoker has been left in the weather uncovered, rust is to be expected on the firebox from the heat generated. As mentioned, you can wire brush that rust off and repaint it with high heat paint and be good to go. Can't beat a free smoker thats well built!
