Finally finished my UDS on saturday and did some spare ribs yesterday. Easy to keep the temperature under control and plenty of room for family dinners. Doesnt take too much fuel and when the neighbors look over the wall and ask "are you cooking with a trash can" it only makes you laugh.
I used to only have a built in BBQ, but in the last month I decided to up my stakes and now have all the items in my signature. Weber Kettle a must. Can do anything with them, including smoking, I am just obsessive and have to have a variety.
Thanks for all of the ideas guys. I ended up getting a Weed Burner from Harbor Freight for 25 bucks on sale. Took some time to get everything but its good now. I think I might have to return my propane tank though. I can see myself wanting to "Play" too much. Hoping to have the unit done this...
If I were to say...stay up all night and do it when nobody knows about it. How much wood/fuel is recommended to completly burn the drum out? Thank you again for all of the help.
Alright, so I am in the process now of getting the "liner/paint" out of a drum that help apple juice in its previous life. I made a fire in the drum on Monday night; however, it was not large enough to do the trick. I am aware that it has to be a large, hot fire, but I am smack dab in the middle...
What if you build a fire basket that is more ring shaped with a hole in the center versus building a basket or cylinder type? Would that help distribute the heat more evenly or would it waste fuel in the long run, anybody have and ideas?
If you have a Harbor Frieght in your area you should check there. My girlfriends dad and I got one there for $36 a piece. It is a smaller vertical charcoal unit with water pan, to wire racks, seperate acces doors for both charcoal and water and a dome lid. Works great for smaller family smokes...
Yeah, I was not able to find it online, thinking of getting another one for larger get togethers, I happened to see it one day while there with my girlfriends dad and he bought it for me as repayment for fixing his car.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I will have to setup a photobucket soon. Pops had some ribs from the last batch and came home the next day with 8 lbs of babybacks. Guess I am already in need of that bigger smoker if I am not able to come up with something else. Looking forward to trying to 3-2-1 or...
I just used the minion method this Sunday for a Tri Tip. It was much easier to keep everything at a low temp and I was able to stay on the couch for the whole football game isntead of having to check all of the time. ET-73 never went off saying it was too high on the temp either.
Hello all,
Recently got into smoking. Girlfriends dad bought me a cheapo vertical water smoker from harbor freight in payment for fixing a car. Best 36 dollar gift EVER . Done a few tri tips and some baby backs. Looking forward to many more and love all of the useful information that is...
