Yeah I've found those, but I just can't justify spending that much on shipping...
I found some suitable springs yesterday from a local shop, I think I'm going to make "cool" handles myself :-) It won't have that tapering shape, but who cares...
Well, then, no airspace. I think Ribwizzard mentioned on some thread that it would be a good idea. Yeah there will be an upper intake :)
Then I could raise the firebox a few inches, but that would make the opening even larger. Are there any negatives of having a FB/CC opening of 200% or more...
Is that spring handle also from the States?
You can get some gaskets from Finland, there is a company that sells them from a roll. I think they have pretty good selection.
They promised me to sell them also by the meter, if they had an opened roll on hand.
Nice tools and skills
I cut it yesterday, used a roll of sandpaper as a wrap-around. I'm not sure how accurate it was, looked pretty good though. I didn't have the means or time to check it, since it was not on a level floor.
I also used a magnet strip as a guide for the plasma, it was too short so I had to move it...
I did my cut on my previous tank by laying the tank on a level surface. Then I made a jig out of 4x4 cut to correct length and mounted a pen on it.
Then just ran it around the dome end keeping the plywood at the ground at all times. It came out pretty straight.
I didn't trust my plasma...
Yeah, but there's not that much room to work with. With those dimensions I posted, there's about 10" of clearance to ground. I'm hesitant to drop the FB any lower than that.
And I can't raise the tank that much, it's about 35" in diameter and will have three cooking grates. If I raise it more...
Then it's going to hang off too far away from the trailer end ;-)
I guess I'll have to make some trade-offs as usual. Just have to decide which ones.
Do you think it's really bad if the FB is wider than the tank? I think I've seen some commercial designs like that, not sure if they were RF or not.
Here's a rough sketch. In this sketch the FB is not much much wider than the tank, but I'd actually like to make a bit wider. Would that mean hot air could get trapped under the top edges of firebox? My tank is 250 gallon, it's short and really fat. I ran the numbers through the calculator and...
Does firebox shape matter? I'm planning a build that dictates long and wide firebox, but not so tall. It would be about 40" wide, 30" long and 22" tall.
Do you think I'll run into issues with the top plate burning out prematurely? I think I'll go with 1/4" steel for the firebox.
Also...
That wrap-around looks to be just what I need. Have to get a bit creative with it, I have never seen such thing for sale anywhere in Finland.
I actually once thought about using a magnetic strip for marking, since it would also hold still easily. But usually they are are too short for this.
Hi there,
I have a new tank that needs to have the end cut off for the FB end.
What's the best way to cut it straight? I have a plasma, but I'm having a hard time measuring/marking a straight line on the tank. I don't think the original end cap weld is even remotely close to straight.
I've...
Hi,
I recently got a new tank, which is around 35" in diameter and the straight part is 51" long. I'm going to cut the FB end off and weld a new end plate, since I've found out that it's much easier to work around that flat end. Naturally I'm going to keep the other end to allow for good...
Wait,
I'm still confused. You guys said calculate with 100% firebox and multiply by 1.5x, but this example is calculated with 106.6% firebox and multiplied by 1.5x?
I've always calculated with my FB's real size and multiplied with 1.5x like in this example...
Hi,
What kind of smoker would you build from an old oil tank? It's really fat, I'd say the diameter is around 40" and length maybe a bit more. Would it work as a RF build? I think I could easily fit 4-5 racks in there, just concerned that the temp difference could be huge from the bottom to the...
Yeah I knew that, was thinking I'd grind the galvanizing away before welding since I've heard that works also. That, and use a half mask respirator while welding.
Hmm,
I'm getting my tank sandblasted, but I have to cook before that. Do you I could cook with the old paint on, or would it start giving aromas to my BBQ? I don't think the outside of cooking chamber would get that hot at all...
Yeah, I know it's not recommended, but there shouldn't be temperatures high enough to do any damage in the cooking chamber, right?
I'm asking because it's impossible to get simple black threaded pipe here in Finland any more! It's ridiculous, a couple of years ago it was everywhere...
