If the thing has been sitting outside in the mud for 20 years the bottom maybe rotted out of it.

If you want and easy way just run a standard RF plate, then when you want a charcoal grill lay 1" thick firebricks on the plate so it does not absorb all the heat from the coals.
Build a slider for the lower pull out basket. You don't want that thing tipping and throwing hot coals all over yourself.
You will use a massive aount of coals to get all that up to temp and maintain it.
The coals will likely snuff out against all that cold steel.

So what is your plan?
The lower shelf will cook ok, but upper not so much. What you have is a parrilla sort of with coals directly underneath.
Damm, that must be heavy all those forged shelves and will take a lot to heat up.

You are like me , I would rather chill n grill out in the country instead of stressing at a competition or event cooking for 100's.
Maybe I am anti social but nothing better than out in nature watching a big hunk of meat cook over fire while having a few cold ones.
