As long as there is enough room around the edges of the pan for smoke to flow around you should be fine. You might put a little water in the pan to prevent the initial drippings from burning and causing unwanted smoke.

This is the same smoker that I have and I have been very happy with it! I haven't done any specific mods to mine, however I have considered the needle valve but so far have been fine with out it. I rarely use a water pan when I smoke (personal preference) so I haven't worried about...
