    Who uses lava rock?

No, never. Lava rocks are for grills where the burner flame directly impinges on the lava rocks. A smoker is indirect heat, so lava rock will not serve the same purpose.

    Modified RF Build Opinions

The math is not a big deal. Take half the tank volume, then add the volume of the box above it to get the total CC volume. Plug that into the calculator and you are off and running. Given that your drawing is not to scale, I must still add that the firebox is way too small. Your concept is valid...

    Temperature variations..

Yes, it is normal. It is not uncommon for the mounted dial therms to read lower than a probe in the center of the grate. Both are reading correctly. The probe is what you want to use most often. The door therms are a back up in case the probes fail for whatever reason. As long as  you know the...

So many questions, where to start?

Robert- What is your question? If you are waiting for the answer you want, you may have a long wait. Everything on your list is doable on a 20" - 24" diameter smoker.

250 gal RF Build ??? Are my calculations correct????

Either one is correct. A single big door is useful for large items like a whole hog. Two smaller doors can be more convenient for smaller cooks. No.

New Guy and this will be my 1st Reverse Flow Smoker Build

Well, don't get wrapped around the axle on the stack; a 6"ID stack at 36" will be fine. The worst case scenario is wanting to change the stack later for the possibility of more even temps in the CC. Bear in mind that is only a possibility. A larger ID stack does not guarantee more even temps...

New member here and working on a started project

The upper air inlet is best placed across the FB from the CC. The lower air inlets below the fire grate can be placed on any side of the FB.

planing to build a reverse flow in australia (virgin build)

No. The environment inside the CC is dynamic. No matter where you locate the exhaust, there is no possibility of smoke becoming "stale".

about to buy steel for firebox/warming box and want a second opinion on design

First of all, 1/4" for the firebox is just fine. Routing the exhaust through the warming box will reduce the exhaust height by the height of the warming box, so no real improvement there. 4" exhaust is really small for a 500 gal smoker. An 8" exhaust would work much better.

    smoker/charcoal grill combo

I wasn't aware of that rule; how many pictures do you have to have built up to start a thread? ICYMI, the answer is zero. Start the thread. Your experience may help others with or without pics, and the sooner the better.

    thickness steel

Insulating the FB increases the efficiency of the smoker so that you use less fuel during the cook. Since more of your heat is going into the CC instead of being radiated off of the FB, you can build a smaller fire to maintain cooking temps in the CC. It has the added benefit of keeping the...
