    UDS builders/users, got a question...

Is this an example of "The Minion Method"? I fill a 1 lb coffee can that I've cut the top and bottom out of and put the plastic lid back on with about 12 briquettes, then dump them in my chimney and light them. While they're heating up, I take the plastic bottom off the coffee can, put it in...

    Remote Thermo Range Boost

While browsing around for some new remote thermos I started reading about the Maverick ET-73 Smoker Thermometer on Amazon.com and checking out the reviews on it. Most complaints were the same as for other thermos: the range is less than it should be. One guy that replied with a review also...

    Remote Thermo Range Boost

After I posted this, I saw the Meat Thermometers forum down below. I looked earlier, but didn't see it. I'll post this down there too and if the admins want to delete this then, that's fine. Sorry

Ok here are my uds build pics

Yup the basket is only 6" high. i haven't had the opportunity to do a long smoke in it yet, but have been told it will do a 12-14 hour smoke. I fired it up for it's test run with all the vents open and let it run wild. it took 1 1/2 - 2 hours to get up to 525º and I let it run that way for...

Ok here are my uds build pics

That 12" x 24" expando from Home Depot makes a great charc basket. Just cut it in half lengthwise and either bolt or weld it together. Here's mine that I did that way. It holds half a 20 lb bag of charc.

My New UDS and Seasoning Fatties

I've got about $100.00 wrapped up in it. I know I can get the parts cheaper and can probably get the price down around $75-85.00. but I was in a hurry. I'll do better shopping around next Spring when I build the next one.

My New UDS and Seasoning Fatties

I didn't want it stickin' straight out of the drum, 'cause my clumsy butt would be bustin' my ankle on it, plus I'm kickin' around an idea to add a steel rod to the handle of the valve to operate it without bending down and it has to be positioned that way for it to work. That's why I went with...

Pork Butt, Beef Chub, Spicy Fattie & Bacon Wrapped 'Taters

My first big smoke in the UDS. After finishing and seasoning my UDS on Friday night, I wanted to give it a real try other than just the seasoning fatties, so I decided to run a 8.75 lb pork butt, a 3 lb log of ground chuck for chili and nachos, a hot sausage fattie with 2 chopped japs and and 2...

My New UDS and Seasoning Fatties

Well, after getting my new drum and scrubbing it out Thursday, Friday I drilled 2 3/4" vent holes and 1 1 1/4" hole to accept a 1" ball valve. I've read that putting an elbow on the ball valve restricts the flow somewhat, so I went up one size from the standard 3/4" valve. I also cut the bottom...

    Country Style Ribs and Fatties

Yesterday morning while rummaging through the deep freeze to find something for dinner, I ran across a pkg of country style ribs that had been in there for about 6 months, so out they came and into a pan of water to thaw. Now usually when I fix these things, I put a rub on them, then take them...

    How To Clean Big Smokers?

Do you know if anyone takes the grates out and powerwashes both the grates and the inside bottom of the smoker?

    How To Clean Big Smokers?

I've been to a few cook-offs and comps to see how it's done and to get ideas for a big smoker build that I have in mind and I know those big rigs have to get pretty grubby inside with all the grease and juices dripping. How do those things get cleaned? I know some have drains and that will get...

Are These Drums Safe For A UDS?

Well, I went out and turned the drum over and tried the lid. Still no go, but it's closer. Maybe close enough so that I might be able to hammer the rim of the barrel in just a little and using a hammer flare the rim of the lid out a little, not doing anything major to either. It's worth a try...

Are These Drums Safe For A UDS?

Well, it's all a moot point now. I brought my Weber grill lid back from our lake place and it doesn't fit. When I line it up with one side of the drum rim, there's an inch of clearance on the other side. I don't want a flat lidded one reck UDS and I only want to build one of them. So one berrel...

Are These Drums Safe For A UDS?

Dave, a good washing will get rid of any residual ash from whatever was burned out and yes, my first plan of action is to brush it down to bare metal with an angle grinder with a brush in it. Then I'll wash it out again and once dry, I'm thinking of giving it a coat of high temp primer, then a...

Are These Drums Safe For A UDS?

Well, I did a 3 hour burn on one of them yesterday. Gotta go winterize our lake place so I won't get back to it until Monday. I'll be bringing a Weber lid back with me.

Are These Drums Safe For A UDS?

Why do you say that Steve? I've been told that the steel isn't porous, so if burned and scrubbed what would be left to hurt? Convince me!

Are These Drums Safe For A UDS?

I appreciate your input on this, but now that I think of it, any environmental issues with these have most likely been created before I bought them. The guy I bought them from had had a fire in one of them and both had been hosed and rinsed out at his place. I don't see any residue in them, but...
