The only discussion on these that I've found was about ten years ago, so I'll start a new thread. I have some cubes that I haven't used, but did burn one today to see how they behave. Seems to light easily, burn hot, and is unaffected by a breeze. However, I noted an odor of some type of...
Here's a link to Franklin's smokers: http://www.wideopencountry.com/franklin-barbecue-pits/
$2400-2500 each. With 2,000 orders, that's about $5m in guaranteed sales prior to initial offering. Of course, the signups don't necessarily mean purchases. But still, ...........
As far as...
They are the same for the purpose of smoking meat. Black cherry is one of MANY species of cherry. Some cultivars were developed for their edible fruit, some for lumber. The black cherry yields inedible fruit, but nice wood for making cabinets, furniture, etc. Go with the longer cured black...
I note on Aaron Franklin's web site that he will be making and selling smokers in 2018. No info is given as to price, dimensions, etc. Somehow I don't think they will be cheap. Scroll to the bottom of his home page for info.
I bought and use a moisture meter to check wood moisture. Mine is from Harbor Freight. It was cheap, but seems to give accurate readings. I shoot for wood under 15% moisture content. The duration time of curing doesn't matter, as there is a large amount of variation between pieces. It's how...
I know nothing about the design of the IQ120. In theory, it functions the same as several other thermostatically controlled blowers. I have the BBQ Guru unit and the company offers many different types of fittings to install it on various types of smokers. None use a plastic tube to attach to...
Looks like they have all the woods you mentioned. If you go there, they're located on Durant Road, about half a mile west of Capital Blvd. Cross the RR tracks and immediately turn in. They are in a small building at the back of the haphazard little "shopping center." You'll see the smokers...
Seasoned smoking wood in that part of NC may be difficult to find or unavailable. I can offer only two suggestions.
1. Visit one of the DIY stores on the outer banks (Lowe's or Home Depot) and load up with charcoal and some of their wood chunks.
2. It might be a little out of your way...
I guess the motor runs continuously with the clamp on the switch. I would think that's OK since the motor would be under no load most of the time. I actually have a clamp like the one you show. I thought about a longer handle with a bend such as what you describe. I'll finish splitting the...
I haven't been able to come up with a system to make the splitter operate with one hand or foot. Until I do, here's my quick-fix solution. A full face shield.
Also, note the positions of the operating lever. That's a pretty hefty rotation and it takes about 15-18 pounds to pull it down.
Thanks for posting those links, dward. I'm going through them and thinking about mods I can make. The HF splitter apparently HAS been modified over the years. I read the comments and saw the same suggestion about pushing the motor switch until it clicks for continuous running. Unfortunately...
I'll look into moving the control box. I opened the cover and saw too many wires to the switch to know which to bypass with a remote switch. But if you find something about it, let me know. I was splitting some wood this afternoon and one piece popped open with a bang. Pieces went flying. ...
Thanks for the replies. Most of this wood will be need to be split to some extent, some will be burned as is. I set up my miter saw with a mark on the ground at 14" so I can rack the wood evenly. Most of it is now in the 15-18% moisture range, so it'll need some drying time. For immediate...
