I agree with the guys above. I seriously considered mounting on the HF one, but upon further research it is not worth it. Depending on where you want to take it, you will most likely need to pay for a costly inspection/title service and it says in the fine print not to drive the trailer over...
Thanks HB, a buddy of mine at work just got a MES and hasn't cooked any butts yet. I shared your info with him, he said to tell you thanks! He'll need to get his own handle on here soon, I think he's hooked like the rest of us...
Ron, what did end up with in terms of square feet of rack space? I still haven't finished my calculations to figure out max # of ribs in mine. Wanted to use your 38 rack estimate on yours as a guide.
Thx
Nice hillbilly, couple questions.
What smoker temp did you go with for that long?
What IT did you hit?
What are the mats that you have on your racks?
Thanks

I haven't had a chance to do a good evaluation on how even the temps are from side to side and top to bottom. I still have some work to do:
-Install the seal around the doors (I have wood stove door rope and RTV silicone, just haven't had time)
-Buy and install some fixed thermometers...
Second cook on this rig and I couldn't be happier with the results. I upped the charcoal usage a little on the start (~ 18 lbs) and about 5 hrs in added another 8 #s and cherry wood throughout. Didn't use a ton of wood (didn't need it to maintain temp), had thin blue smoke all day! Got a...
ML313, that would have been useful to know about 4 months ago!!! In the end, price was a big factor for me. The $100 price on the welder kinda made my decision, if I had known working with mig was easier I still might not have gone that route if the equipment was more expensive.
Thanks ML313, I paid about $24 for the first angle grinder at HF, cheap piece of junk but it had a 90 day warranty that resets each time you get a replacement. So, since February when I bought the first one I just kept returning them when they broke. I think 3 of them the spindle lock button...
I agree with kam59, I used #9 3/4" flat expanded with 1" tube frames and they are working out great (pardon the pun). The day I finished welding and grinding them I sprayed them with cooking spray and haven't seen any rust on them since. With 4 burns on them, they are nice and seasoned. I...
As a complete novice welder as of February of this year, I would have to suggest going with flux core mig welder if you are just learning. A couple videos on youtube and I was on my way with my build (I just finished over the weekend). Like Lance P, my only experience with welding was in 8th...
First Smoke Complete! Finished up the paint job on Friday and Saturday (well, the wife did – I am a terrible painter), one last seasoning burn Saturday night, and then a test cook on Sunday. Ice cold Iron City, ribs, rib tips, chicken and a 5th Stanley Cup championship for the Penguins! It...
Looks great! How did the paint hold up on the first burn (and what kind of paint did you use)? I plan on painting mine later today (trim) and tomorrow (rest of the tank/firebox/support structure), burning one more seasoning, and then cooking on Sunday for game 6 of the Cup finals. Let's Go...
The counterweight I installed doesn't hold the door down, gravity does that for me. The steel on that door is only 1/8" thick with additional 1/8" x 2" flat bar and I just used 1 1/2"angle iron as the counterweight. The only purpose I see for the design I went with is to keep the door from...
Post some pics. I used an oil tank and spent a long time with an angle grinder getting the cook chamber down to shiny bare metal. Went through ~30 flapper discs but came out fine.
To get the volume of your oval tank, try the oval tank calculator on the Calculator Soup site or just take your gallons (275 x 231= 63,525 cubic inches):
http://www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/construction/tank.php
Go from there with the rest of the calcs:
63,525 x .33 = 20,936 cubic...
