I think you have the effect of I and D reversed. I is integral, or what we used to call "reset". D is derivative.
Integral should look at the error over a long interval and try to "reset" the set point to adjust for any lingering error.
D looks at the first derivative.

@hkeiner: Is the Auber unit identical to the Bradley? If not, then the settings from the Bradley may be completely wrong for the Auber.
Different PID controllers will use different PID algorithms. Further, the scaling of the parameters are unlikely to be the same between brands and models...
I hope I'm not derailing this thread too far with this, but all of this comes up, so:
That's one of the things I figure people might like about a pellet smoker. People want to simulate a wood-fired smoking/cooking setup. And while you have good control with one of these modern pellet smokers...
YES! :)
The other day, a guy posted that he wasn't getting enough smoke flavor from his smoker, and was asking about how to use a separate smoke generator with it. He thought that his smoker was all-electric, and posted to this part of the forum.
When he posted a link to show his smoker, it...
This is all interesting.
I have designed control systems and the like for over 40 years, so I understand where @Richard Foster is coming from!
There are a number of different PID control algorithms, and without knowing the particulars, it's hard to even offer advice about tuning a PID control...
You would think that the subject of thermocouple connections would be common on this forum. I think a lot of PID controllers and thermometers might use TCs, so the subject would come up often here!
Usually in the US, type K thermocouple or extension wire will be color coded with the positive...
Forgive me for having edited this post a few times as I re-read your initial posts and am trying to tailor my answer properly for your application.
Most of the inexpensive consumer-grade temperature measuring systems I've played with use neither RTDs nor Thermocouples. Instead, what seems to...
That's gotta stink, too! When you really burn any protein, it really smells nasty.
Even the deep frying is something I'd do out on my deck. The splatter helps seal the redwood, and the oil vapor won't attach to everything in the house making it smell for months.
Good warning! Thanks.
Is this a type K thermocouple?
If so, you must use type K thermocouple extension wire, and properly connect every joint. Thermocouples are interesting.
Type K uses chromel for one side and alumel for the other. A thermocouple develops a small voltage at the junction of two dissimilar metals...
Who knew this thread would end up with a lot of great recipes and techniques being posted?!
My and my wife's favorite sous vide "thing" for the last few years has been this:
I buy a few full cryovac tenderloins at Sam's. They're a lot less per pound than cut tenderloins.
I get out the vacuum...
I take it you sealed it intact for the sous vide.
Did you vacuum seal it, or just bag it somehow?
I have yet to try smoking something prior to sous vide. I have done the reverse for racks of baby back ribs. Sous Vide to get them cooked, then finished them in the smoker to get a crust and...
If the link you posted is, indeed the smoker you have, then it is like the one that had me fooled for a while when I ran across it at a local Wal Mart.
I really liked the size and the way the racks could be positioned in many different places, but alas, like the one you linked to, it is not...
If your moist weather is causing condensation to form on some areas that already have smoke residue, that moist residue will easily conduct enough electricity to cause what everyone is referring to as "leakage".
GFCIs operate by comparing the current in the hot leg with the current in the...
I'm curious what model of Pit Boss smoker you're using.
Burning pellets in something like the AMNPS, I get such economical use from the pellets that I use mostly the pellets from Todd. I order in larger batches to keep shipping cost reasonable, and don't need to order very often.
I use...
Yes, but the poor connections in the digitals were also mentioned up higher in the thread, and a big point of this thread is just bad connections frying due to poor contact. So I think that post is on-subject. :)
Here in the US, the white wire is supposed to be the neutral, and the colored...
I think the main thing to realize is that the Masterbuilt electric smokers don't make proper smoke on their own at any temperature, and none at all at low temps because they rely on the main heating element coming on full bore to periodically ignite the wood chips.
So most folks eventually end...
