This would be my thought. A kettle steel isn't anything special or "thickness". The older GMG were made of good steel and it should convert into a really nice coal grill. You could set the coal grate right on the older deflector plat and you will be GTG
Just a small update but one that really helps it come together.......I acid etched it and then electo-etched my makers mark then set the guard.... I really like the rustic guard!
Once the epoxy for the guard was set, ie 24 hours I pinned the "bone" on. I have shared this before but the trick...
We have a Cuisinart with multiple blades and bowl sizes, it was $$$$ It gets used about once a quarter.....However this one one gets use ALL the time (2 to 3 times a week)!
Man what a blast from the past! We used to make those as Scouts; we even made them for fundraisers for the troop. We would cook it two ways, one in a CI the other was wrapped on a stick and over the fire....then butter and jam on that one....

We have had a whole string of 90:lbs plus….have some 98 in the guess cast this week as well…..although this is pretty normal for us, July Aug are usually scored earth!

the grill was mostly new back then, but I do keep it clean. Our Costco sells them whole time to time as well but the thick slices are just ok easy to pass up!
