Actually, the first day they were soaked and didn't smoke much, so I just left them in there when I was done and the next day, they were dry and started smoking instantly! But the smoke I could smell both days but couldn't see...

Welcome, I am from Niagara on the Canadian side! I am still a newbie so I will leave advice for the pro's but I have to say you have found the HOLY GRAIL of smoking here. These folks are awesome and quick! I did some steaks and posted a message and by time I hit refresh I already...
It was a quick thing... so I didn't get the camera out.
However... since I don't have lava rocks I find of just put it off to the side of the bbq near the element. I have a heat shield but didn't think I could put it between the grill and the element.
