...5 years now with no complaints. I've been getting them for $10/20lb bag. This is from a local dealer selling out of their home. I also use a pellettube (https://www.amazon.com/Pellet-Smoker-Tube-Stainless-Generator/dp/B07JGVBKN3?th=1) to increase the amount of smoke flavor I get on my cooks.
I appreciate the response, if you can pm me some links to these upgrades I don’t mind spending a few hundred lol, I use my big pellet grill all the time so this will be a learning curve as I know nothing about this thing other than turning it on, do you use the water pan on these?
I'm a little late for this one, but I use Pitt Boss brand pellets exclusively and have had no issue with them. The competition blend 40 pound bags I get from wal mart are usually $15 so if you can get them for $12 , buy a few!
FWIW, a 27 gallon tote with lid will hold (3) 40 pound bags.
That's a great feature , and have wondered why they all don't have a manual / no ignition options to drive pellets .
The SmokeFires run in reverse at the end of shut down . That clears the tube , but not the feed chute .
It does have the pellet dump , but the chute has to be vac'd .
I've...
Question for everybody, is there a too cold outside temp to cold smoke? Now it is teens to 20's F outside. Could I cold smoke this salmon on my weber or MB800 with a pellettube and no heat?
Sure is . I was overloading it when I first got it , and wasn't giving it enough intake air .
When I stopped over thinking that part , it works great .
My first Kettle was an 18 " one touch . Way back in 1982 . I used to do all kinds of indirect cooking / smoking on that thing .
Baked cakes ...
Brian, that looks abso'freak'in'lutely delicious!!!
If I can find Lumber Lumber Jack pellets around here, I'm gonna load up on straight hickory, and straight oak pellets. They really helped the smoke flavor using my old Camp Chef pellet pooper.
Have you tried making a smoke bomb using chips and...
All three cooks looked great. Knew you had to be north of me because I would have smelled the smoke. Think I must be only guy that smokes meat in Naples. Miss my pellet smoker in MO and been struggling holding temp with my propane pit and tube smoker.
I have a Grilla grill, it has a smoke mode?
I am figuring its not going to have a heavy smokey flavor ?
Maybe use if for an hour or 2?
Then turn up the temp with no smoke @ the end ?
To get a slight crust ?
...do the MES with a pellet smoke tube or tray. I would also add chips to the feeder whenever I got bored for the extra smoke! Either or you can’t go wrong id you have both the pellet along with a pellettube or tray inside would yield the same results as long as you smoke to 203-205* finished temp
...There are options.
Is your smoking space limited to an attached patio or deck?
A gas grill can be a very good smoking platform. I use a pellettube (OK that may be stretching the NO wood rule) in an indirect heating meaning meat over burner 3 and only running burner 1 for heat. I use a...
Nice look lox. The recipe and procedure is simple and straight forward.
Since we are have 32F temps here at night lately I may try an early morning cold smoke with just the pellettube and see where it goes. Hopefully, with enough air flow, I can keep things below 85°F.

This is how to rewire the MES for a PID controller:

My own hack for using a smoke tube either inside the MES or in the mailbox mod...
As long as the smoking chamber is above freezing and below 80 F you should be fine. It depends on the smoke generator you use. My tube raises temperatures by about 10 to 15 F in my Weber Genesis. If it is still too cold, put a large bowl of hot water in the chamber.
Beware, wet pellets can turn into something almost like cement which can freeze up an auger. Having gone through this once (because I was lazy) I now never leave any pellets in the smoker. My MAK has a pellet dump door plus I let the smoker continue to burn up what's in the auger tube until it...
...will dissipate less in the air once it clears the tube? I might just be overly concerned with neighbors being bothered by the smoke but we are allowed gas or electric grills and I don't think it'll smell much stronger than a gas grill with a pellettube, which I do not believe I'd get any...
...smoking cumin seed and whole peppers or ground versions of both?
Never smoked cumin. I thought it adds enough of a natural smokiness.
I've smoked whole paprika peppers but never the powder.
As Ryan @Brokenhandle suggests use just a pellettube or pellet / dust tray for smoke. Don't need any...
I run a MES40 Gen 2 since 2013. I recently added a mailbox mod with pellettube or maze which solved many serious problems. I recently looked into a PID, but was not sold with advantages of steady temps over the usual +/- 20 degree swings electric smokers are known for. Our kitchen oven works...
