I and my buddy across the street use a weldingblanket during the warm up and pull it for the cook.
I leave my on in colder temps as I mostly low and slow . Buddy doesn't smoke so he pulls it.
Not sure what the book says, but 40° sounds about the range.
...drastically the smoker may have problems holding temp.
You could always buy some of that mylar bubble or fiberglass insulation or a weldingblanket type item and just wrap the smoker from the outside to give it insulation in these times. Guys have done it and posted great results about doing...
Harbor Freight is a good source for a cheap weldingblanket. Some use moving blankets, as well, which can also be purchased from Harbor Freight.

Hello welcome aboard. I used this blanket to cover my 590. I did purchase the all season vent covers and cut out around them and used foil tape to keep the material from shredding. Taped up any other cuts that were made also. Use heavy magnets (harbor freight) to hold in place...
...also up size the stack. I would also go with a 4" ID pipe 36 - 38 inches above.
I also wouldn't have an issue with 3/16" plate either...... Honestly a weldingblanket over the CC if there is wind or extra cold will compensate for a lot as well. Hopefully this gives you some ideas.............
Ive used my rec tec down to below freezing. I have a cold weather cover (insulated). the smoker works fine, pellet consumption is notably higher for sure. I have read weldingblanket achieve he same result.
You are not over thinking it.
Any chance you could get your hands on a weldingblanket?
Maybe a sheltered location like under a patio cover or in the garage with the door open?
Temps in cold weather, you are correct. I have a MES 40 with blanket and weldingblanket insulated and had a hard time doing a ham trying to maintain 250° but it was -8° also. RT 590 did 300° no problem in that temp.
...no heat! Replaced it and things immediately went back to normal. I live in central NYS and when I use my WSM, I keep it wrapped in a weldingblanket in the winter. Well, actually, all year round, as it keeps temps stable no matter what the wind is like. The weldingblanket is a cheap one from...
...gasket for the fire box because the biggest draw back to the top side fire box lids is leakage of heat.... On cooler or windy days a weldingblanket will also be your friend. I would also gravitate to the brand that has the thickest gauge steel (as long as it is built tight)……..
As a side...
Thanks so much for the help! It's really appreciated.
So just to recap.
- Blanking plate on the top of the FB to CC input, then if flow restricted potentially opening further to the sides as required. If I add 30% to the volume (28.35" vol from the calculator, plus 30% = 36.86"), it would...
...front ledge, and it also has built in thermometers that hook into the WiFi PID. I’m probably going to be getting a fiberglass weldingblanket, but I think the info on those is as bit more clear-cut. Since I’m trying to give people gift ideas for me, are there any other BBQ-related items...
Oh here is the solution that really did it, get a 6x8ft weldingblanket, wraped it around the smoker, cut holes for ventilation and screwed back the handles and all fixtures again over the double layered weldingblanket.
