I and my buddy across the street use a welding blanket during the warm up and pull it for the cook. I leave my on in colder temps as I mostly low and slow . Buddy doesn't smoke so he pulls it. Not sure what the book says, but 40° sounds about the range.

Temps in cold weather, you are correct. I have a MES 40 with blanket and welding blanket insulated and had a hard time doing a ham trying to maintain 250° but it was -8° also. RT 590 did 300° no problem in that temp.

my opinion is you will have temp swings but a welding blanket to cover your smoke chamber may help.

Oh here is the solution that really did it, get a 6x8ft welding blanket, wraped it around the smoker, cut holes for ventilation and screwed back the handles and all fixtures again over the double layered welding blanket.
