I prefer propane because of their mechanical simplicity and how easy it is to fix/mod. Simply having the burner and not complicated wiring is a big plus to me.
I didn't want an electric one in case it rained as well, just didn't feel comfortable with that.

I very well could be wrong but wouldn't taking the temperature of a surface with a laser therm be different at times than an ambient temperature probe that is taking the actual temp inside?
Where are you aiming the laser probe to take the temperature? Not sure that would be accurate for an ambient temp reading unless I'm understanding wrong.
I think it has to do with the failure rate of the element and the price is costs to fix it. On gen 1 you can switch out just the heat element but on gen II it requires a whole extra piece to be installed with it which is more expensive.
It's not to say everyone will have problems, just a lot...
