Are you using the lava stone that sets below the top of the fire box on the x-bracket?
If so, try using a pizza stone directly on the rack. Let the charcoal burn longer before closing the grill. Keep both top and bottom vents open and good luck.

I used some hickory and pecan. A few times the smoke got too thick. I believe that some of the hickory might not have been cured enough. Hickory can be strong. I need to get some good oak. I'm on the lookout. I've got the smoke fever now!!!

I had a difficult time getting thin blue smoke all of the time. The ribs were really good but too smokey. They turned out the best. I should have wrapped everything a little earlier. Perhaps the hickory wood was not cured enough. I'm hooked though, I can tell you that for sure...
Ribs were nice and caramelized, flavor was too smoky. I didn't wrap soon enough.
