Tracked down the heating element this evening, it's 1500 watts. As for smokebox size, I can't say for sure until I'm able to measure, but it's comparable to the shell that originally came with the element (which the element EASILY heated to temp). I'm hopeful the blanket test bears fruit, but...
Not sure on the power, but the size of the shells are similar. I have used a handful of higher quality thermometers scattered throughout the box and still can’t reach temp anywhere. Good idea on the blanket, i’ll Try that soon.
Update, I surrounded the element with lava rocks and tried again, still to no avail. When I put the element back into my Brinkmann dome, I EASILY reach 250 and that thing is very poorly sealed. Could the difference in shape truly be all important?
Sorry, I should’ve mentioned that. I had an whole array of thermometers in that thing. The two you can see in the pic (door and smoke stack) plus a couple of my digital probes scattered throughout the box.
