I've sat on this sight for a few months and thought I would introduce myself. I'm almost done with my first UDS build. My first smoker was a gas bbq with the vent holes covered with foil. It was a bit ridiculous. So I am happy to almost be done building my first UDS.

I found a local shop hat has done a few and they quoted me only $100.00 better than other quotes of $160.00

I'm calling Sacramento powder coating shops and they're hesitant to coat my uds. They're worried it will flake off. I tell them it won't have high temps but they're all hesitant. Feedback please. Thanks.

I have to burn my lid as well. Did you deal with any warping of the lid. I'm worried about it getting too hot.

Why not, it should work graat. Looks good. Wish I had the ability to weld the lid on!

I work all weekend and all of next week. Wish I had more time. But I will definitely put some pics up when done.

Hey guys- What do you think about using a weber smokey joe as the coal box? I would take off the legs (all it takes is a flathead screwdriver) and leave the base as my coal box? They're 14 " in diameter. Would it be able to hold enough coals? 

I checked out Home Depot and they sell stainless steel chain. I priced it out to about $12.00 total for what I would need. I wanted to try chain since it would give me an adjustable grill height and limit the amount of holes I put in the drum. I would like to weld, but I don't know how to.
