Firebox door on side or top?

It's on the side of the firebox. Kind of hard to tell position in the pic.

Firebox door on side or top?

Any suggestions on what to do with this hole? I thought about using it for cleaning ashes, to push them out of the bottom vent. Or as a "peep hole" to check the coals and wood.

Firebox door on side or top?

This is what I have so far. I think Im going to go with a square door on the end of the FB, with a clean out/vent at the bottom.

Firebox door on side or top?

Thanks Danny. The problem is that I have been rethinking it,,,,for 3 days and can't decide what to do with it. I had decided to do the top door, but after getting it marked to cut, I wasn't 100% certain that I wanted to do it. I just can't make my mind up. There are too many options. I don't...

Firebox door on side or top?

I plan on making a vent that is big enough to push the ashes out.  I like the side doors better, but Im worried about warping the top. Its only 3/16. I was lied to about the thickness when I bought the tanks. I wouldn't have bought it if I had known that it wasn't 5/16.

Firebox door on side or top?

Building my first smoker,  reverse flow on a trailer. My question is does it make a difference if the firebox door is on the side or top?

    Couple of fatties

Never cooked a fatty. Heck, I have never heard of one until I came to this forum. But I have to say, that cordon bleu looks GREAT. I may have to try one this weekend.

I think I am going to have to ask a Mod. to move my thread. I have decided to go with a reverse flow.

Ok, so cut the doors out, bend strapping, drill holes and tack starting from outside in. Good to know. I guess I should have bought that spot welder for $25 at the last auction I went to. Sure would have come in handy.

Next question. This build is out of an old diesel tank. I am worried about the doors deforming with the heat from welding on the flanges. Should I worry about this? It is rather thin metal.

Thanks Dave. I think I am going to scrap the "french" doors though. May not be the best idea with the doors swinging out. I will probably go with 2 doors that swing up instead of out. I will still make one that overlaps the other though. I want to be able to stick a whole hog in. I have recently...
